About Eikendal

Eikendal is a distinguished wine estate tucked between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, along the scenic R44 road in the Helderberg ward. Owned by the Saager family (originally from Zürich, Switzerland), the estate was established in 1981, and since then has been steadily modernised. The vineyard spans about 76 hectares and benefits from a “mountain- and-maritime” microclimate, with the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the slopes of Helderberg mountain. This mix of climate and favourable soils gives their grapes slow, steady ripening, with aromas, structure, elegance, and finesse in their wines. The winemaker behind Eikendal is Nico Grobler.

Wine Philosophy & Varieties

Eikendal pursues a philosophy of minimal intervention in their winemaking, letting terroir show through. They grow and produce a variety of wines, both reds and whites. Some of their prominent grape varieties include:  Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz (Syrah) among others.  Whites: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. Their flagship red blend is called Eikendal Classique. One example of their wine-making style: their Pinotage 2015 was produced from trellised, non-irrigated vines, hand-picked, with long slow fermentation, and matured in older Burgundian oak barrels for 12 months. It shows perfumes of pomegranate and strawberry, with a mineral core and fresh finish, age-ability to about six years.
