About Lourensford
Nestled in the heart of Somerset West, at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, Lourensford Wine Estate is a feast for the senses—forests, fynbos, fruit orchards, and vineyards stretch across approximately 4,000 hectares, caressed by cool breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. Lourensford has a long heritage: it was originally established in 1709 by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Over the centuries it has been a world-class fruit farm, known especially for its floral proteas. The estate’s winemaking revival came when Dr. Christo Wiese acquired Lourensford in 1998.
Philosophy & Wine Ranges
The guiding philosophy at Lourensford is one of minimal interference in winemaking—letting the grapes and the terroir speak for themselves. They offer several wine ranges, each reflecting different characteristics of the estate: The River Garden Range – Accessible, easy-drinking wines. These express varietal fruit with elegant palate structure, inspired by the tranquil beauty of Lourensford’s gardens. Lourensford Range (‘The Dome’ wines) – Named after The Dome, the highest peak on Helderberg which surrounds the estate. Wines in this range draw on elevated/vantage terroir, offering wines that reflect the interplay between mountain, valley, and vine. Limited Release Range – Boutique, premium wines made with strict vineyard selection, berry sorting, and delicate handling. These are intended to showcase the estate’s unique terroir in a more refined, classic, award-winning style. Other categories include Flagship, Cap Classique, etc.
